Commentary on The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann D. Wyss

A terrible storm strands a Swiss pastor, with his wife and four sons, on a tropical island. Luckily, the Robinsons are optimistic and inventive, and with what they salvage from the wrecked ship, the island's abundant fruits, plants, and animals, they soon adapt - each day discovering new dangers, skills, and delights in their strange new life.

  1. So did you read the short book (1 part) or the long book (2 parts)? If you read the long book you were in luck - the second part was the better part.

The whole story is so contrived - a father who knows everything about everything, a shipwreck that has everything on it that will make their lives so liveable, animals of every nature which they always shoot on first meeting, food that grows lush and tasty. And if something is missing, there is always the wife's carpet-bag which will have that needle and thread, or any manner of things needed.

Consensus is that this book need not be on any list of "must reads".
